Morpurgo Class have been refining their Art skills.
The started by sketching flowers in pen, then colour - adding tone by using different shading techniques. The children then did some printing using fabric using the hapa zome method - hammering to release the dye from natural flowers and leaves. They then moved onto making flower sculptures using wire which were very effective.
At the end of last term it was Children`s Mental Health Week, the theme was `This is my place.` In Dr Seuss Class, we joined the live assembly with Picture News and thought of what that means to us and where we feel like we belong. The children came up with some fantastic ideas. We heard the story `Sylvia`s candle` read aloud by Author Katie Hopper. We discussed how we can help light people`s candles and the impact our actions have on others. As well as remembering we all have a light inside of us which shines bright and how we can keep it shining bright ourselves. The children drew what and who are special to them. We also played some games where we got to know each other better, sharing our favourite things and asking others about what they like. It has been wonderful to highlight the ways in which we make others feel like they belong.
Morpurgo class were lucky enough to take part in a mental health webinar by Kooth, who in partnership with the NHS and other organisations provide free mental health support to young people from ages 10-18.
The children found this webinar very interesting and interacted very well - asking relevant questions
Morpurgo class are studying The River Thames for both History and Geography so we walked to the river. The children will be learning about how The River Thames has been used over the centuries. This trip engaged the children in the topic to be taught. They compared what they could see now and what they could have seen a hundred years ago or a thousand years ago.
Children were also able to make links to their previous history unit - WW2- and thought about how the river was used during the war.
`I knew that the wind turbines would not have been there even 50 years ago` Damian
`I think the River Thames was used to transport weapons and soldiers` Johnnie.
